13th Goran Schildt Regatta 2023 – Event Summary
The 13th edition of the Goran Schildt Regatta (GSR) took place in September 2023, featuring a spirited competition among 18 boats representing 12 different nationalities. The event, hosted by the Nautical Club in Leros/Lakki, showcased three days of challenging races across the picturesque waters of the Aegean Sea.
Race Overview:
- Day 1 (18th September): The regatta kicked off with a route from Leros to Lipsi. Competitors faced formidable conditions, with wind speeds reaching up to 40 knots near Lipsi.
- Day 2: Due to strong winds, the planned route around Lipsi was modified to a clockwise course. Despite forecasts predicting winds of 20 knots, actual conditions reached 30 knots on the western and northern sides of Lipsi, providing a true test of sailing skills and strategy.
- Day 3: The final leg took sailors back from Lipsi to Leros, with northerly winds moderating to 15-20 knots, offering a slightly calmer yet still competitive conclusion to the regatta.
Results:
In the Open Class, the boat Solo emerged victorious overall and also topped Subdivision A for larger boats, led by Captain Tarek Tuten and his seasoned crew. Trinity took second place in both the Open Class and Subdivision A, while Robust clinched third place in the Open Class and won Subdivision B for smaller boats. Among the smaller vessels, the Finnish boats Penelope and Manta secured second and third places, respectively, in Subdivision B.
In the ORC Class, Trinity claimed the top spot, followed by Imagination in second and Mayflower in third.
